Sky Sports pundit Jobi McAnuff has pushed back against Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder’s recent comments comparing his side to Leeds United.
Leeds reclaimed the top spot in the Championship on Tuesday night (10 December) with a commanding 3-1 victory over Middlesbrough, just two days after Sheffield United’s 1-1 draw with West Brom left them trailing in the promotion race.
Following the Baggies draw, Wilder described Leeds as being “miles ahead” of his team, acknowledging the gap between the two Yorkshire rivals in the Championship standings.
However, McAnuff, speaking on Sky Sports News (19:40), suggested that Wilder’s remarks were more about managing expectations than reality.
“No, I wouldn’t say that at all,” McAnuff said. “It’s good management in just trying to deflect a bit of that pressure and that heat.”
The former Reading winger praised both teams, calling them the strongest in the division. “In terms of squad-wise, they are the two strongest for me. With Leeds and the options they have got, particularly in those forward areas, they are certainly going to be a team that is there at the end of the season.”
The race for automatic promotion continues to intensify, with Leeds holding a narrow advantage at the top and Sheffield United vying to close the gap.
