Graham Potter sees Liverpool man as “good option” for West Ham

West Ham United boss Graham Potter is reportedly interested in signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez this summer, but the versatile centre-back is currently happy at Anfield and unlikely to leave unless circumstances change.

According to Football Insider, Potter views Gomez as a “good option” to bolster West Ham’s defensive line, especially with the Hammers keen to strengthen at the back. However, Gomez — who is about to begin his tenth season with Liverpool — remains content on Merseyside and is not actively pushing for a move.

Gomez’s future could hinge on Liverpool’s summer transfer business. With Jarell Quansah set for a switch to Bayer Leverkusen, the Reds will be left with only three central defenders. They have been linked with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and are expected to target at least two centre-back additions before entertaining the idea of letting Gomez go.

Former Liverpool scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that West Ham are not the only club monitoring the situation. “He’s been linked to Everton and Leeds as well,” Brown revealed. “If Liverpool decide to let him go, there will be a lot of clubs looking to bring him in. My sources tell me that Potter wants to strengthen at the back, and he sees Gomez as a good option.”

Gomez, who joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015, has made 241 appearances for the club. Despite a career plagued by injuries — including a hamstring issue last season that required surgery — the 27-year-old remains a dependable presence across the back line. While primarily a centre-back, he has also played at both right and left full-back positions for the Reds.

Whether West Ham can tempt Gomez away remains to be seen — but their interest is certainly real.
