Italian media fuming as Newcastle United scout £40m ‘untouchable’ golden boy

Italian media are in uproar after reports emerged that Newcastle United have stepped up their pursuit of highly-rated centre-back Giorgio Scalvini.

According to sources, the Magpies have been tracking the 21-year-old since his return from a serious ACL injury last season. Though Scalvini managed just a few appearances before being sidelined again with a shoulder issue, Newcastle remain undeterred—mirroring the club’s approach with Tino Livramento, who was signed for £35 million just two games into his own ACL comeback.

Scalvini, once valued at £60 million, has seen his stock dip slightly due to injuries. However, with eight senior caps for Italy at just 21, he is still regarded as one of the brightest talents in Italian football.

Interest from Newcastle has intensified in recent days, prompting fierce reactions in Italy. TuttoAtalanta described Scalvini as “untouchable,” insisting Atalanta have no intention of selling their prized defender.

Despite the strong stance, Newcastle have reportedly made enquiries, with some outlets claiming Atalanta could consider offers around £40 million—a fee that fits the Magpies’ current transfer strategy.

While PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) restrictions have eased at St James’ Park, Newcastle remain cautious about overspending. Failed attempts to land Premier League targets like Marc Guehi—due to inflated valuations—have pushed the club to explore more cost-effective options abroad.

Scalvini could be the next major addition to Eddie Howe’s evolving backline if Newcastle can find a way through Atalanta’s resistance.
