Everton’s struggles to find the back of the net may force manager Sean Dyche to reconsider his reliance on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, according to former Premier League striker Dean Ashton.
Ashton, a former England international, commented on the Toffees’ offensive challenges after observing their 0-0 draw against his former club, West Ham United, on Saturday, 9 November. In what he described as an uninspiring display, Ashton noted Everton’s defensive solidity, particularly with the return of Jarrad Branthwaite alongside James Tarkowski.
Speaking live on Sky Sports News on 10 November, Ashton remarked, “Everton can be defensively sound and keep clean sheets. The turning point for them last season came when Branthwaite and Tarkowski were performing at the back.” He acknowledged that the defensive pairing once again proved effective, helping the team to secure a clean sheet against West Ham.
However, Ashton believes that Everton’s lack of firepower up front remains a significant issue. “The issue is whether they can score goals,” Ashton said. “Dyche is sticking with Calvert-Lewin, and I’ve been a striker going through a poor period. You do want your manager to back you until it turns around again, but how long does he give him?” he questioned, hinting at the possible need for a change.
