Jamie Carragher has raised concerns over Everton’s recruitment strategy during Sean Dyche’s tenure as manager, questioning whether the club’s signings have been impactful enough.
Dyche, who took over as Everton’s manager in January 2023, is nearing two years in charge. His time at the helm has been turbulent, with the club struggling to find consistency. This season, the 53-year-old manager has faced criticism from fans after a lackluster start, despite what appeared to be a promising summer transfer window.
Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher highlighted a significant issue with the club’s recruitment and the lack of influence from new signings. “You know, the sporting director is Kevin Thelwell. You know what I think about Sean Dyche at Everton, from when he came in, any player he’s bought virtually they’re still not really in his first XI, maybe Ndiaye this season,” Carragher said.
Carragher went on to list the players who were already at the club when Dyche arrived, including key figures like Jordan Pickford, Vitaliy Mykolenko, James Tarkowski, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. “Pickford was there before he came, Mykolenko was there, Branthwaite was there, Tarkowski was there, Dwight McNeil was there, Calvert-Lewin was there. Doucoure was there. Gueye was there. Michael Keane was already there,” Carragher pointed out.
The former Liverpool defender also criticized Everton’s limited spending during Dyche’s time, suggesting that the club’s recruitment efforts have not yielded significant results. “They haven’t spent loads of money, they’ve bought five or six players for £15-20m, and they don’t play,” he said.
