Everton Football Club is nearing a takeover by the Friedkin Group, with expectations that the deal will be finalized before the new year. This potential ownership change offers hope to a club that has struggled with uncertainty and financial challenges under the current majority owner, Farhad Moshiri. Moshiri’s tenure has seen the club fall down the league standings, becoming embroiled in relegation battles and suffering a points deduction due to violations of Financial Fair Play regulations.
The anticipated takeover by Dan Friedkin, who also owns Italian club AS Roma, has sparked a mixture of optimism and caution among fans and experts. Friedkin’s stewardship at Roma has drawn scrutiny, with some raising concerns about the stability he may bring to Everton.
Italian football expert Dougie Critchley, who has closely followed Friedkin’s tenure at Roma, voiced his reservations about the incoming ownership. Critchley highlighted Roma’s recent managerial turbulence as a warning for Everton fans. “I don’t think there’s a top club in a worse state at the moment than Roma,” he remarked. Critchley pointed to a sequence of abrupt changes: “Fire the manager that won their first trophy in 14 years, hire a club legend on an interim basis, back him with £76 million spent on 10 players, sack him four games into the new season, and then bring in a manager known for defensive football at mid-table clubs. That manager wins only 4 out of 12 games and is dismissed.”
Critchley cautioned Everton supporters, many of whom are hoping for a period of calm and stability after Moshiri’s exit. “Everton fans looking for a period of calm post-Moshiri… beware,” he warned. Speculation that Everton might pursue Frank Lampard as manager has only intensified concerns among fans who have grown weary of the club’s instability.
