Newcastle United could be set to revamp their goalkeeping department this summer, following an eventful start to 2025 that has seen fierce competition for the number one jersey.
In January, it appeared Martin Dubravka was heading for the exit, with Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab showing concrete interest. But a knee injury to Nick Pope opened the door for the Slovakian international to step back into the spotlight. Dubravka seized the opportunity, producing a string of strong performances — including two clean sheets against Arsenal — to help guide the Magpies to the Carabao Cup final.
However, as Pope recovered fitness, head coach Eddie Howe reinstated the England international as his first choice. Pope repaid that faith with a decisive performance in the final, notably pulling off a crucial save to deny Liverpool’s Curtis Jones at Wembley.
Despite signing a contract extension in February, Dubravka’s future remains uncertain. The 35-year-old has attracted attention from Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic, and Newcastle are reportedly open to a sale, having secured his long-term commitment to protect his transfer value.
The Magpies are already being linked with potential replacements. According to weekend reports, Howe is eyeing a reunion with Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale — whom he previously managed at Bournemouth. Ramsdale, 26, could be available for £25 million due to a relegation release clause in his contract with Southampton, where he has been on loan.
Newcastle are also tracking Burnley’s James Trafford. The 22-year-old is highly rated, and his current valuation stands at £30 million. However, Burnley’s potential promotion back to the Premier League could complicate any summer move.
With Pope nearing 33 and Dubravka even older, Newcastle appear keen to bring in a younger long-term option — and both Ramsdale and Trafford fit the profile. As the summer window approaches, changes between the sticks at St James’ Park look increasingly likely.
