Gary Lineker Criticizes Referee’s Decisions in Newcastle vs Liverpool Match

0

Gary Lineker has expressed his belief that Newcastle should have been awarded a penalty during their match against Liverpool, following a controversial challenge in the box. Lineker shared his thoughts on the incident alongside fellow pundits Martin Keown and Micah Richards, with all three offering differing interpretations of the situation.

“The defender dives in, I’m going to go with the ref because that’s what we want to do in the game, but, Gary, that looks like a penalty to me,” Keown said, suggesting the challenge on Newcastle striker Alexander Isak deserved a spot-kick. “I’m not certain he gets a touch on that.”

Richards, however, offered a different perspective, saying, “He gets a little touch there, but he gets Isak as well. But it’s still a foul, it’s a foul.”

Lineker agreed with Richards, asserting, “But it’s still a foul, it’s a foul.” The incident has sparked debate over whether the defender made contact with the ball or the player first.

However, the penalty incident wasn’t the only controversial moment during the match. Referee Andy Madley came under scrutiny for a number of decisions, including a soft booking for Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister for a foul that many felt was too minor to warrant a yellow card.

The most notable error, according to Lineker, came at the end of the match when Madley blew for full-time while Newcastle were launching a counter-attack. Lineker pointed out the timing, saying, “There’s this, full-time, the referee blows when the ball is at the halfway line doesn’t he? I guess if time is up, time is up.”
