Leeds United entered the season with a promising quartet of midfield options but have already lost two due to injuries. Ilia Gruev, who was also forced off against Norwich, has undergone surgery and will be out for an extended period.
With Ampadu and Gruev sidelined, Daniel Farke is left with just two options in midfield: Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell. Despite the limited choices, the duo has impressed in recent matches, combining well in draws against Norwich City, Sunderland, and Sheffield United.
Tanaka, in particular, has been a standout performer. The Japanese midfielder played a full 95 minutes for his national team just two days before featuring for Leeds against Sheffield United. Despite the demanding schedule, Tanaka consistently displayed exceptional composure and defensive abilities.
Former Leeds defender Tony Dorigo praised Tanaka’s performance during the match, highlighting his physicality and passing ability. “Tanaka has got that physical side in him,” Dorigo said. “He can certainly do that, can pass too. One of the calmest players on the ball you’ll ever see.”
As Leeds United continue to navigate their injury-ridden season, the performances of Tanaka and Rothwell will be crucial in maintaining their position in the Championship.
