Everton have alleviated significant Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) challenges by generating £70 million from academy player sales, according to Kevin Thelwell.
Speaking to iNews on 21 November, the club’s director of football described the financial pressures Everton have faced in recent years and the critical role the academy has played in navigating them.
“We’ve had a PSR issue year on year in the time I’ve been here, so we have to find successes from the academy,” Thelwell explained. “We’ve generated circa £70m in profit from the academy, which is a crazy number, really.”
Thelwell highlighted the contributions of players such as Anthony Gordon, Ellis Simms, Tom Cannon, Lewis Dobbin, and Ishe Samuels-Smith. Their transfers have provided much-needed funds to keep the club operational and compliant with financial regulations.
“If we’d had our time again, we’d not have wanted to do some of those sales,” Thelwell admitted. “But on a needs-must basis, we’ve had to do that.”
The director of football emphasized the dual role academy players have played in the club’s survival. “They’ve either gone to the first team to help us win games, or we’ve had to sell them to resolve PSR issues,” he said. “That’s helped to keep us in the league and functioning as a club.”
Everton’s reliance on academy-generated revenue underscores the challenges facing the club and the importance of nurturing talent for both competitive and financial stability.
