French Ligue 1 club Rennes are reportedly preparing a £15m bid to sign Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier in January. According to French outlet Football Club De Marseille, Rennes manager Jorge Sampaoli is keen to bring in a new goalkeeper to replace 39-year-old veteran Steve Mandanda. Meslier is one of two options being considered, alongside PSV Eindhoven’s Walter Benitez.
Meslier, whose contract with Leeds runs until 2026, has attracted significant interest, but the January transfer window could be Leeds’ last opportunity to secure a substantial fee for the Frenchman before he potentially departs on a free transfer. Rennes are reportedly ready to make their move with a £15m offer.
However, Leeds may be reluctant to part with their key player in the middle of a promotion push. Despite interest from Rennes, manager Daniel Farke is unlikely to sanction a sale in January, as Meslier remains an integral part of the team. The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who has kept 11 clean sheets in 20 Championship matches this season, is also focused on securing a spot in France’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Leeds are reportedly aware that if they fail to win promotion this season, Meslier could leave the club, with Graeme Bailey of LeedsUnited.News stating that the goalkeeper is likely to move on if the team is not promoted to the Premier League. Despite this, Rennes, having cashed in on several players in the summer, may be prepared to offer a deal that Leeds could find too good to turn down.
