David Moyes Criticizes James Tarkowski’s Performance in Everton’s Heavy Loss to Manchester United

David Moyes has openly criticized Everton defender James Tarkowski for what he described as a “really poor” defensive display during the Toffees’ 4-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The pivotal moment came when Tarkowski, positioned near the halfway line, failed to clear the ball in time, allowing Marcus Rashford to dispossess him. Rashford’s intervention set up Joshua Zirkzee, who capitalized on the error to score for the hosts.

Moyes, the former Everton and Manchester United manager, dissected the performance on Match of the Day 2 (1 December), highlighting Everton’s unusual defensive vulnerabilities under Sean Dyche.

“[Everton] just seemed to give goals away today,” Moyes remarked. “Which is really, really unlike Everton and [Sean] Dyche’s sides. It just didn’t really seem like Everton there.”

Focusing specifically on Tarkowski’s misstep, Moyes was blunt in his assessment. “Tarky will not like this at all because this looks really poor. He should deal with this much better—either he’s got to tackle it or he’s got to pass it out,” he added.

The defeat compounds the challenges facing Everton as they navigate a tough Premier League season. With defensive lapses like this under scrutiny, both Tarkowski and Dyche will be seeking swift improvements to regain form and confidence.
