Carlos Sainz who learned before the season opener in Bahrain that he would not be retained by the team for 2025, has finally secured a seat with Williams for next year. This move follows months of negotiations and rumors linking the Spaniard with various teams on the grid.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the possibility of Sainz joining, but ultimately, it was Williams who signed the 30-year-old. Addressing fan rumors, former F1 driver David Coulthard weighed in on the possibility of Sainz joining Red Bull to replace Sergio Perez, as well as the future of Williams’ young talent Franco Colapinto.
Responding to a fan question after the São Paulo Grand Prix, Coulthard said, “That’s a really interesting one. No, is the answer to it.” He added, “Could Sainz go to Red Bull? If money was involved, maybe. But I think before Carlos signed for Williams, he explored all possibilities, and Red Bull wasn’t one of them.”
Coulthard went on to address Colapinto’s potential trajectory, noting, “What we have now is to see where Colapinto ends up—whether that’s at Audi or if he becomes a ‘super sub’ for other teams.”
