Ted Kravitz Shares What ‘Seething’ Max Verstappen Said to George Russell Ahead of the Qatar GP

The 2024 Formula 1 season has delivered its fair share of drama, but few could have predicted the escalating tensions between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell, sparked during the Qatar Grand Prix.

Verstappen, who ultimately clinched victory in the race, was visibly frustrated despite his triumph. A one-place grid penalty for allegedly driving too slowly during his cooldown lap in qualifying left the reigning champion seething ahead of the event.

The race itself was eventful. Although Verstappen clocked the fastest time in qualifying, it was Russell who started from pole position. However, the advantage was short-lived. On the charge to the first corner, Verstappen’s Red Bull outpaced Russell’s Mercedes, forcing the latter to the outside line, allowing Lando Norris to overtake him as well.

Adding to the tension, Verstappen reportedly confronted Russell before the race. Sky Sports’ Ted Kravitz shed light on the altercation, explaining, “The rumor is that Max was furious with how George pushed so hard for him to receive a penalty. He confronted George in the Driver’s Parade holding room, saying something like, ‘You and your FIA mates, I hope you’re happy with what you’ve done.’”

While Kravitz noted that Verstappen’s exact words were likely harsher, he highlighted the incident as a key moment in the growing rivalry. “This definitely won’t be left on the editing room floor when Drive to Survive airs next February,” Kravitz added.

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner later acknowledged the confrontation, describing it as “tasty” but refraining from delving into specifics.

As the F1 season barrels on, this latest spat adds yet another layer of intrigue to what has already been an explosive year on and off the track. Fans will undoubtedly keep a close eye on the Verstappen-Russell dynamic as the championship continues.
