Newcastle United have reportedly set their sights on Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo as a top target for the January transfer window, hoping to secure the in-form winger to bolster their attack. After missing out on several high-priority signings over the summer, Newcastle appear ready to refocus their efforts, with a right-winger now at the top of their list.
According to sources, Mbeumo is Newcastle’s “dream” signing, with the 25-year-old’s outstanding form for Brentford catching the club’s attention. The Cameroon international has scored eight goals in 12 appearances so far in the 2024/25 season, putting him in high demand. However, Newcastle is not the only club interested in Mbeumo—both Liverpool and Arsenal are also monitoring the winger closely.
Chris Waugh of The Athletic commented on the potential for a January move, suggesting that while Newcastle might pursue Mbeumo, completing a deal could be challenging. “Brentford are hard sellers and expect a fee of ‘£40million-plus’ for the winger,” Waugh explained.
Newcastle’s sporting director, Paul Mitchell, faces additional considerations if the club proceeds. Waugh highlighted two factors that could impact Mitchell’s decision. “At 25, he is slightly older than the kind of player Paul Mitchell would ideally recruit,” Waugh noted. He added, “It would also represent a continuation of Premier League-based players being signed more often than not, and while Newcastle intend to keep recruiting domestically, Mitchell’s stated goal is to widen the pool.”
