Damon Hill Defends Johnny Herbert Amid Jos Verstappen’s Bias Allegations

0

Former Formula 1 champion Damon Hill has publicly defended Johnny Herbert following accusations from Jos Verstappen, who claimed that Herbert shows bias against his son, Max Verstappen, in his role as an FIA steward.

Herbert, a former driver and current member of the FIA’s rotating steward panel, recently contributed to decisions that penalized Max Verstappen during the Mexico Grand Prix. Verstappen was handed two 10-second penalties following incidents with title rival Lando Norris, including one for forcing Norris off the track and another for gaining an advantage by leaving the track.

In the wake of these penalties, Jos Verstappen, known for his vocal support of his son, criticized Herbert, accusing him of bias. “A steward shouldn’t talk to the press at all and just deliver work all the time,” Jos said, suggesting that Herbert’s media presence was inappropriate for someone in his position.

Max Verstappen, also critical of the penalties, hinted at a broader issue within the sport. “I’ve got the wrong passport for this paddock,” he commented, alluding to what he perceives as unfavorable treatment.

Hill, who has previously criticized Max Verstappen’s aggressive moves on Norris during the race, responded to Jos Verstappen’s remarks with a strong endorsement of Herbert on social media. Taking to Instagram, Hill wrote, “JH has a right to an opinion. More than most actually.” Hill, who has shared broadcast duties with Herbert on Sky Sports F1, underscored his support for his colleague amid the backlash.
