Pundit Shares Why Newcastle United Are Now Disappointed with Joe Willock

Newcastle United’s midfielder Joe Willock has become a focal point of frustration within the club as his lackluster performance in the 2024-25 season continues. According to Chris Waugh, a journalist with The Athletic, the 25-year-old’s struggle to find form has left many at the club disappointed.

Willock, who concluded the 2020-21 season with an impressive eight goals in just 14 appearances during his loan from Arsenal, made headlines by scoring in seven consecutive games, equaling a record set by club legend Alan Shearer. His remarkable form earned him a permanent six-year deal with Newcastle.

However, last season saw Willock sidelined by injury, limiting him to only nine league games. This season has not started any better, with the midfielder failing to make a significant impact in his seven appearances.

“Willock has been disappointing,” Waugh stated in response to a Newcastle fan’s query about the player’s current situation. “Especially so when he came on against Brighton. It is a massive frustration for many at the club because, when he is on form, he brings unique qualities to the midfield.”

Waugh emphasized the midfielder’s distinctive ability, saying, “Nobody else can carry possession in the dynamic way Willock does, and without him, Newcastle appear more pedestrian and predictable.”
