Former Tottenham Hotspur manager and club legend Glenn Hoddle has voiced his frustration over a past decision by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, calling it a “massive mistake.” Reflecting on Tottenham’s turbulent recent history, Hoddle pointed to Levy’s choice to sack José Mourinho just days before the 2021 League Cup final as one of the most baffling moves in his tenure.
In an interview on the Stick to Football podcast, Hoddle shared his view on the decision that stunned Tottenham fans at the time. Known for his history of making bold choices, Levy’s decision to part ways with Mourinho—hired specifically for his trophy-winning experience—left many scratching their heads.
“They tried that with Conte,” Hoddle remarked, acknowledging Levy’s pursuit of managers with a proven track record, even if their styles weren’t aligned with Spurs’ traditional attacking ethos. “No, I think there is a massive mistake that Daniel Levy made. José got them to a cup final—a stepping stone, a League Cup final—but he sacked him on Monday,” Hoddle recalled, with evident disbelief. “That doesn’t make sense to me and it never will. I don’t understand that at all. He brought him in to win a trophy, and he has a good record against Pep and City as well.”
Hoddle’s comments highlight ongoing frustration among Tottenham fans who, despite Levy’s ambition, have endured years without silverware. While the club’s trajectory has shifted since that decision, the controversy surrounding Mourinho’s sacking continues to spark debate among supporters and pundits alike.
