Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has hit back at critics claiming his tenure has stagnated, while admitting the importance of keeping his squad fresh to prevent “staleness.” Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s clash with league leaders Liverpool on Wednesday, Howe outlined plans for the January transfer window, including potential player trades.
Despite sitting 11th in the Premier League, the Magpies have faced criticism from fans for perceived lack of progress over the past year. Addressing these concerns, Howe remained resolute, emphasizing his commitment to continuous improvement.
“I’ve no doubt that criticism is out there,” Howe acknowledged. “It doesn’t matter if you’re winning, losing, or drawing — it’s magnified when you’re not at your best. But that’s part of the job. I understand it, expect it, and live with it. It doesn’t change what I do. I’m always analyzing the team to see where we can tweak or improve.”
With Newcastle struggling in attack — their 14 goals mark the fifth-lowest tally in the Premier League — Howe admitted the need for fresh ideas. “If anyone thinks I’m sitting here doing the same thing week in, week out, that couldn’t be further from the truth,” he said. “But changes must help, not hurt. We need to stick to what works and adjust the areas that don’t.”
The manager also hinted at reshaping the squad in January to maintain a positive dynamic. “Sometimes the same squad can produce a staleness,” he said. “Freshness is vital. That might mean trading players in and out to keep the group evolving. Every season needs a new dynamic.”
Howe dismissed claims of stagnation, pointing to his philosophy of attacking football. “I would rather not have a job than compromise on that,” he affirmed.
