Eddie Howe Hints at Potential Newcastle Future for Callum Wilson

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has suggested that Callum Wilson could extend his stay at the club beyond his current contract, which is set to expire in the summer.

When asked about Wilson’s future, Howe expressed admiration for the striker’s contributions and left the door open for a potential renewal.

“Is there a scenario where Callum could stay beyond his current deal? Of course there is,” Howe said. “Callum’s got outstanding qualities. I know everyone in football has short memories, but you look at what Callum has done since I’ve been here – when he’s been on the pitch, he’s been incredible.”

Wilson, a key figure in Newcastle’s rise, played a vital role during the club’s Champions League campaign, forming a dynamic partnership with Alexander Isak. Howe reflected on their impact last season, emphasizing the frustration of losing their ability to share the load due to injuries.

“That Champions League season, the way he and Alex [Isak] dovetailed together to help each other and the team to produce some brilliant performances and results was brilliant to see,” Howe noted. “Now, for a long period of time, we’ve lost that ability to play them together or to help them share the load. That’s been a real frustration of mine, and I know for the players themselves too.”

Howe also stressed the importance of Wilson achieving consistent fitness as the primary focus before contemplating contract matters.

“My wish for Callum is just that he gets back consistently fit. If he does that, then there’s no doubting his qualities,” he explained. “Beyond that, the future will take care of itself. I don’t necessarily get too bogged down or worried about that [the contract], it’s more about just helping Callum in the short term.”

The 31-year-old has been a pivotal player for Newcastle since joining in 2020, and fans will be eager to see whether the club secures his services for the long term.
