Chelsea Poised for January Windfall as Newcastle Eyes Marc Guehi Move

0

Chelsea could secure a significant financial boost in January, with Newcastle United reportedly reigniting their interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The 24-year-old, who graduated from Chelsea’s Cobham academy, has become one of the Premier League’s standout centre-backs since leaving Stamford Bridge in 2021.

Guehi joined Crystal Palace on a five-year deal for £18 million after a loan stint at Swansea City under Steve Cooper. As part of the transfer, Chelsea negotiated a sell-on clause—entitling them to 20% of any profit Crystal Palace earns from a future sale—and a matching-rights provision for any potential offers.

The England international impressed during Euro 2024 and was heavily linked with Newcastle in the summer. However, Crystal Palace reportedly turned down four bids for Guehi, including one worth approximately £65 million. With Guehi entering the final 18 months of his contract and no progress on an extension, the stage appears set for renewed transfer negotiations in January.

According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle plans to return for Guehi but at a reduced offer, citing his declining form and contractual situation. The Magpies’ need for defensive reinforcements has intensified following injuries to key players, including Sven Botman, leaving Fabian Schär and Dan Burn to shoulder the defensive burden.

For Chelsea, a potential transfer would unlock a financial bonus. If Newcastle had succeeded with their £65 million bid in the summer, Chelsea would have earned approximately £9.4 million through the sell-on clause. While Guehi’s current valuation might be lower, a significant January move could still provide the Blues with a healthy windfall.
