Rooney hails Kudus after first Tottenham goal

Wayne Rooney has backed Mohammed Kudus to build on his strong start at Tottenham Hotspur after the Ghana international scored his first goal for the club.

Kudus struck in Spurs’ 2-0 win over Leeds United, latching on to a Pedro Porro pass before cutting inside and finishing from the edge of the penalty area. He also provided an assist in a display that drew widespread praise.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, Rooney said:
“I think he’s been a breath of fresh air. You look at the stats from the game – he’s first in everything: duels won, successful dribbles, shots, touches in the opposition box, sprints. He’s had a real impact for Tottenham this season. He’s joint first in Premier League assists, he’s by far had the most successful dribbles in the league, and all that was missing was the goal. I think today’s goal will push him to the next step. He’s been a real top signing.”

Against Leeds, Kudus won ten duels, completed six dribbles, had three shots, four touches in the opposition box and recorded 20 sprints.

Former England striker Peter Crouch also hailed his performance, while Alan Shearer described Kudus as Spurs’ “best player” so far this season.
“He deserved that goal because he’s been Spurs’ standout performer this year,” Shearer said.

Head coach Thomas Frank celebrated with Kudus at full-time, underlining the importance of his first strike in north London.

Tottenham will hope that opening his account will help Kudus kick on and establish himself further at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
