Leclerc Defends Verstappen’s Aggressive Tactics Against Norris in Mexican GP

Charles Leclerc has weighed in on Max Verstappen’s controversial driving tactics at the Mexican Grand Prix, suggesting that any driver in Verstappen’s position might have done the same. Verstappen, who faces intense pressure from title rival Lando Norris, picked up two 10-second penalties for aggressive moves that many saw as dangerous.

Verstappen, still leading the World Championship but struggling against a resurgent McLaren team, hasn’t secured a race win since June’s Spanish Grand Prix. Leclerc believes that Verstappen’s actions are rooted in the championship stakes, as Red Bull’s performance gap has forced the Dutch driver to adopt riskier tactics to maintain his lead.

Reflecting on Verstappen’s maneuvers, Leclerc acknowledged the controversy but offered a defense. “The second move on Lando, I think this is over the limit,” Leclerc stated, “but I also think that whoever you put in his position might just do the same, because we are fighting for a world title. It would be very false to say that drivers would act differently.”

Leclerc continued, pointing out that Verstappen’s frustration stems from Red Bull’s recent struggles against McLaren’s momentum. “He feels that the car he has is not as good as at the beginning of the season, and McLaren has really good momentum right now,” he explained. “Sometimes he will go over the limit, like he did in Mexico. But again, they’re fighting for a world title. So in my opinion, it’s understandable.”

Ultimately, Leclerc emphasized that it’s up to the FIA to set and enforce limits. “We’re working on making it the best possible,” he concluded, underscoring the need for clear boundaries as drivers push for the championship.
