Lando Norris is under fire from fans after seemingly downplaying Max Verstappen’s victory at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, where he attributed Verstappen’s success to “luck, nothing more.” Norris, whose own championship hopes are all but over following the chaotic race, lost the lead at the start to Mercedes’ George Russell, marking another instance of a weak launch from pole position. Though he challenged Russell through the opening laps, Verstappen ultimately surged through the field to take the win.
In a post-race interview with Sky Sports F1, Norris attributed Verstappen’s triumph to luck—a remark that sparked immediate backlash. Many fans took to social media to express their anger, accusing Norris of undermining Verstappen’s achievement.
Verstappen’s performance is already being celebrated as a standout drive, with his starting position of 17th tying for the fourth-lowest starting place for a race winner in Formula 1 history. Under a recent Instagram photo Norris shared with Mexico City GP winner Carlos Sainz, one fan labeled the McLaren driver a “shameful amateur” who had been “humiliated.” Oddly, Norris liked the comment, adding to the controversy.
Norris had also posted a congratulatory Instagram story, calling Verstappen’s drive an “impressive victory,” only to later delete it, leaving fans speculating about his motives for the mixed messages.
