West Ham Manager Julen Lopetegui Faces Growing Pressure Amid Volatile Atmosphere, Says Former Scout

West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui finds himself under increasing scrutiny as the club’s board reportedly loses confidence in his leadership. According to former club scout Mick Brown, there is a mounting feeling within West Ham that Lopetegui’s position may no longer be secure amid disappointing results this season.

Mick Brown, who left the London Stadium in June alongside former manager David Moyes, told Football Insider that Lopetegui’s tenure could be approaching a critical point. “The situation at West Ham is very volatile,” Brown remarked. “He could lose his job and be sacked immediately—at any time, things can change with the click of a finger.”

Despite initially standing by Lopetegui, West Ham’s board has reportedly grown uneasy following the team’s poor start. The Hammers have struggled to find consistency, winning only three of their first 11 games, which has left them in 14th place in the Premier League.

Reflecting on the decision-making process, Brown shared that the club’s owners were initially hesitant to make a hasty change. In September, he told Football Insider that they were wary of “making another mistake” and preferred to give Lopetegui more time. However, after a recent goalless draw at home against Everton, patience may be wearing thin.

“The relationship between the manager, the sporting director, and the owner—I’m not sure how strong it is,” Brown added. “At the start of the season, it wasn’t great. They invested heavily in players for him, but not many of them have performed. That only increases the pressure because if you spend big, you expect results.”

Lopetegui was appointed with the expectation of building on the foundation Moyes left behind, but according to Brown, those expectations are far from being met. “When he was appointed to take over from Moysey, they expected him to keep them moving up the table,” Brown concluded. “So far, he hasn’t managed to do that, and that’s a concern for the club.”
