Former West Ham manager Harry Redknapp has called for patience from fans and club officials as Julen Lopetegui faces mounting pressure amid a challenging start to his tenure at the London Stadium. Speaking on talkSPORT on Saturday, Redknapp emphasized the need to allow Lopetegui more time to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor, David Moyes.
Since Lopetegui took the helm, West Ham have won just three of their 11 Premier League matches and suffered an early exit from the EFL Cup at the hands of Liverpool. Despite these setbacks, Redknapp believes that the manager should not be solely blamed for the disappointing start.
“They’ve had a disappointing season so far, and the manager’s copping it,” Redknapp said. “They’ve got to be patient. David Moyes did a great job there – they can’t suddenly go and kick another manager out; they’ve got to give him time.”
Redknapp also highlighted Lopetegui’s experience managing top-level clubs and argued that the players bear some responsibility for their underperformance this season. “His record; he’s managed at the very, very top level, so I think at the moment the players need to take a good look at themselves,” he stated. “The ones that he’s bought need to start performing to the standard that they were bought for.”
