Karun Chandhok has expressed confusion over Lewis Hamilton’s cryptic comments during his post-race radio message to Mercedes after a challenging Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion hinted it might be his last time performing with the team, leaving fans and pundits speculating about his future.
Hamilton, who struggled throughout the weekend, was eliminated in Q1 and finished a disappointing 10th. Speaking on Sky Sports F1 ahead of FP2 for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Chandhok shared his reaction to the remarks.
“I was really confused by that. We heard him on the slowing-down lap in Brazil, and I was genuinely confused,” Chandhok admitted. “It sounds like he genuinely meant that he didn’t think he would come and do these last three races, which would have been a shame.”
Hamilton later clarified he was considering skipping the final three races of the season. This revelation adds to speculation about his relationship with Mercedes, especially as he prepares to join Ferrari next year.
F1 commentator Peter Windsor has suggested Mercedes may have lost confidence in Hamilton, while the driver himself seems to lack faith in the team’s ability to deliver a competitive car.
Marc Priestley, another F1 analyst, also weighed in, pointing out the decline in Hamilton’s performance this season. “Lewis’s performance with Mercedes seems to have disappeared this year,” Priestley remarked, as Hamilton faces the possibility of his lowest finish in his illustrious Formula 1 career.
Chandhok, however, hopes for a positive ending to Hamilton’s Mercedes journey. “For the sake of the Hamilton/Mercedes story, with all their success, wouldn’t it be nice to see him win one more time? Whether it’s here, in Qatar, or Abu Dhabi, to have one more win before he heads off to Ferrari,” he said.
