West Ham United delivered a much-needed victory, defeating Newcastle United 2-0 at St James’ Park, in a performance that eased the mounting pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui.
The Hammers arrived on Tyneside short of confidence, having lost to Nottingham Forest and drawn a blank in their previous two matches. However, they rose to the occasion with a commanding display against the high-flying Magpies.
Newcastle started brightly, dominating the early exchanges, but it was West Ham who struck first. Tomas Soucek opened the scoring with a perfectly timed header, giving the visitors a crucial lead.
The Magpies squandered chances to respond, with both Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak failing to convert opportunities. West Ham capitalized on Newcastle’s wastefulness when Aaron Wan-Bissaka doubled the lead shortly after the break, securing a vital three points for the London side.
The defensive performance of Max Kilman was particularly praised. BBC pundit and former Watford striker Troy Deeney hailed the centre-back as an “absolute monster” and included him in his Premier League Team of the Week.
“He is growing week by week,” Deeney said. “An absolute monster. His presence at the back was crucial for West Ham tonight.”
