West Ham are eyeing a shock move for Newcastle captain

West Ham United are considering a surprise move for Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles during the January transfer window as they look to address defensive problems.

The Hammers currently have the worst defensive record in the Premier League and are targeting experienced top-flight players to strengthen their back line. Former England international Eric Dier is also among their options, with the defender expected to leave AS Monaco in the coming weeks.

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham are weighing up a move for Lascelles, 32, despite his limited involvement at Newcastle this season.

Although he remains club captain, Lascelles has struggled for playing time under head coach Eddie Howe. He has made just two Premier League appearances this campaign, both as a substitute, totalling 19 minutes on the pitch.

Newcastle are understood to be open to a decision on the defender’s future, with his contract set to expire in the summer. However, the Magpies are currently dealing with their own defensive issues, which could complicate any potential departure.

If Newcastle do not secure a transfer fee in January, they risk losing Lascelles on a free transfer at the end of the season.
