Max Verstappen delivered a spectacular performance at the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, taking victory from a 17th-place starting position on a wet Interlagos track. His win tightened his grip on the championship lead, with Verstappen now 62 points ahead of his nearest rival, Lando Norris, who slipped from pole to sixth.
But despite the impressive display, Sky Sports pundit and former F1 driver Karun Chandhok expressed frustration with Verstappen’s performance, describing it as both awe-inspiring and irritating. Chandhok pointed to recent incidents in which Verstappen’s aggressive tactics had veered into what some consider dangerous territory.
“Well, he’s making a statement, isn’t he?” Chandhok commented during the race broadcast. “Another fastest lap, and his lead is now over 17 seconds – the same number as his starting position. That’s a real statement drive.”
Chandhok noted that Verstappen’s approach seemed unnecessary given his commanding position in the championship. “He doesn’t need to win by this margin. You get the same points if you finish a second ahead as if you’re 18 seconds in front,” he said, adding that Verstappen’s unrelenting push served as a message to his competitors.
Yet Chandhok pointed out what he finds “infuriating” about Verstappen’s recent on-track aggression, citing incidents such as his controversial moves in Mexico. “He’s got more God-given talent to drive a race car in his little finger than most other drivers that have ever been in Formula 1,” Chandhok said, emphasizing the Dutchman’s exceptional skill. “That’s why it drives you mad when you see those moves from Max which are on the edge of fairness. You just think, you don’t need to do that. You’re an utterly brilliant racing driver, and that’s the one we want to see more often, like he’s showing the world today.”
