Aston Villa’s Amadou Onana Hails Transformation Under Unai Emery

Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana has reflected on his growth since his £50 million summer move from Everton, declaring he feels like a “completely different player” than he was at Goodison Park. The Belgian international, who made a strong impression at Everton after his £33.5 million transfer from Lille in August 2022, credits Villa manager Unai Emery for his swift development.

Onana, now 23, has made a bright start at Villa Park, already matching his three-goal tally from 37 appearances with Everton last season in just five games with Villa. Speaking to Birmingham Live, he expressed gratitude for Emery’s influence on his progress.

“Unai has added a lot to my game,” Onana said. “I think I am a completely different player if you compare it to last season at Everton. He has added bits to my game which I didn’t have before. I am really, really grateful and thankful for that.”

While Onana is pleased with his start, he is determined to keep improving. “My start has been good, but it could have been better,” he admitted. “I can still improve on different aspects and parts of my game. I am learning day by day. The manager is one of the best in the business, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with him on a daily basis.”

Reflecting on specific areas for growth, Onana highlighted his work on the ball as an area of focus. “I think more and more on the ball,” he noted. “With my physicality, everyone knows I play with a lot of duels and intensity, but on the ball, I can definitely improve.”
